I want to interrupt the series "Contemporary Thinkers You Should Read" to tell you all about a very important little book. My friend (and a member of my community) Caleb Phillips has just published a book called "Picking Them Up With Both Hands: The Journal of a Young Orphanage Worker." Caleb and his lovely wife Christy, are missionaries. Last year they spent some time in a country that is a bit hostile toward Christianity. They worked mostly, with rural orphans, and in doing so, they became convinced that American Christians must become people who adopt.
During their time in this setting, they met another missionary couple who were trying to adopt a young child with some disabilities. Now, this child was unwanted...for some, it would be just as good if this child were allowed to die. But, this missionary couple saw dignity and worth in the life of this little one. So, they began the process of adoption.
Do you want to know the definition of evil?
Even though this child was unwanted, and better off dead in the minds of the culture, this missionary family is forced to pay between $21,000-$30,000 to actually adopt the child. How is that not evil?
So Caleb Philips, my friend, took a look at his journal, and decided to publish it. Caleb and Christy's aim was to sell the book and give all the proceeds to the family. There are reasons I cannot disclose location, names, and the like. But I can say, that everyone should buy this book -- benefit this orphan and family --everyone should read this book -- let your imaginations be transformed about life and our responsibility to the overlooked, disenfranchised, and broken of our world.
The best way to buy the book is through Caleb at his blog: booksbenefitingorphans.blogspot.com
